Virtual Sports Day
The annual sports day at HKA is and always has been a 'mark your calendar' kind of event. All students have the opportunity to participate in traditional sports day activities, from high jump to the egg and spoon race. There are house events that build comradery between peers and a sense of pride and belonging that competition brings. The decision to offer a virtual sports day was made because we felt we could still replicate the values that a 'traditional' sports day promotes: Competition, inclusion and pride. We offered 8 challenges for students, staff and parents. Results were logged and uploaded to track and monitor individuals and celebrate the participation of all! The marathon challenge, coordination, balance and strength tests and inspirational pictures/videos all earned house points, balancing the competitive need of some with the inclusivity and belonging for others. A livestream showcased participation in real time and provided an opportunity for students to monitor their individual and house efforts. HKA staff tried their hand at the challenges, and coach interviews delved into the specifics of health and fitness from various sporting angles. Hundreds of contributions later saw the RED Phoenix crowned champions and another successful sports day was completed.
