Ameliorating detail

This image was taken from a collection of photos that became Like You. I decided to turn this specific photograph into its own piece because it perfectly captures the happiness and content I feel when I have become into what I believe is as close to my mother as before. My eye contact with her photo along with the small smirk show what it feels like to look like your parents, something I grew up never feeling.

This photograph was the result of a visit to a contemporary art museum with my mother. In the period of time we were together this past year, I wanted to show her some of the art that had inspired me to create art. In the photo, she is looking at Untitled by Bourgeois and Hesse’s Accession IV in the background, set up so it appears my mother is directly face to face with Bourgeois, and Hesse is present too

In this piece, I explored the symbol of the umbilical cord to represent my relationship with my mother. The rope acts as the cord that rests inside the uterus, which is hung inside a three layered piece of canvas (sewn with red thread), to represent the three layers of the uterus. The rope then comes outside of the uterus and spreads in multiple directions to show the many different directions my mother and I are heading, however all of the ropes remain intertwined to show the strength of our relationship.
